BIGGIN HILL AND CHARTWELL (NT)
17th September 2020
Our first visit today takes us to Biggin Hill Aerodrome where a small museum tells the story of the airfield, the people who served there, the local community and residents from 1916-51. The collection has a focus on the Battle of Britain during which Biggin Hill played a pivotal role. Alongside the museum we see the Memorial Chapel of St. George with its 12 stained glass windows that ensure those that died will never be forgotten. The fund raising for the chapel was led by Sir Winston Churchill and so we spend the afternoon at Chartwell. Here we can see the rooms left as they were during his lifetime and evoke his career and interests with pictures, documents and personal mementos. Terraced gardens descend towards the lake whilst the garden studio contains many of St. Winston’s paintings. Time for lunch and tea at the house before arriving home by approximately 6.30pm.
